Gun Laws
My Personal Statement about Gun Laws

Throughout this whole experience my opinion on gun laws have drastically changed. As a advocate for peace my initial opinion was simply that all guns are bad no matter what and should never be legal. I still believe that but now I am aware of the complexity of the issue. Making all guns illegal will only take guns out of the law abiding citizens and will create an even bigger market for the illegal gun industry. It will take all control out of the hands of our government and place it in the hands of criminals. It would push innocent people trying to defend themselfs to commit a crime. I believe guns should be legal but laws should be much more strict for who can obtain them and for what purposes.
Guns are made to kill. Its an unfortunate fact however guns should be legal for one purpose only and that is protection and security. In a world where guns will
exist regardless of the law, a responsible law abiding citizen should be able to acquire a gun to feel safe and secure. This is the idea behind our current laws
however it is obvious something isn't working. Way too often we see massacres and shooting at malls, movie theaters and even schools. Often enough these guns were obtained legally to a person who slide through the cracks of the system. With guns so readably available and common they fall into the wrong hands. What I plan to do to change the system so that we won't allow tragedies to just slide by.
First of all I believe that any automatic firearms should be illegal. There is no reason for automatic guns to exist. They are made to kill many people very
quickly. Secondly, no person should possess more than one firearm at a time. Guns are not for the purpose of collection or a trophy. For the purpose of
protection you should only need one. Next, the ammunition should be strictly monitored, controlled, and recorded. This keeps an eye on suspicious behavior
and leaves less room for error in the system.
Most importantly is who can own a gun. This is were the largest improvement can be made. Very simply to own a gun you need to be responsible and you need to have a significant reason. This is a very easy and obvious concept however these are two very difficult things to monitor. Especially in a industry that is often so high stakes. The obvious guidelines would be easy to identify. You must be a adult, a citizen of the united states, and have a clean record. This includes no criminal past that would raise alarm (felony, violent behavior, many crimes that show irresponsibility and lack of respect for to the law). The
harder things to determine would be a mental health test. No persons with any diagnosed mental/physical illness that would alter their ability to make
responsible and healthy decisions or that would physically disable there ability to use a firearm properly would be disqualified to own a gun.
A healthy test would be designed to measure one's ability to be a proper owner of a gun. This test would be performed entially when applying for a gun licences as well as once a year. The application process and test would cost $100 as well as a annual fee to renew license. It will take a minimum of 2 weeks to obtain licences. Finally at anytime a list of rules are violated the gun licences will admittedly removed. These rules include any serious and or violent crimes
committed. Misuse of the firearm and signs of loss of mental stability. With these new laws in place to envision a safer america where guns are here for
protection and no the cause of innocent deaths.

My Project Reflection
During this role play I learned a lot about my own option of guns. My ideals evolved from a simple thoughtless notation to a complex understander of the issue. Hearing others opinions and auguring my views helped me thoroughly think out and develop what I have to say. My role in the role play was in the house. I was part of a group who was deciding who exactly should be able to obtain a gun licence. As a role playing simulation I think this project went terribly. It was very unorganized and I was confused the entire time. I thought the rules and “roles” seemed unnecessary. It became very frustrating when my solid and thought out opinions were completely overlooked by people who didn't seem to be thinking about the topic much at all. I could tell I was not the only person who felt this way. At the very end many of my classmates seemed very upset and some even hysterical.
It was here I made the connection. The simulation was helped me connect to the actual confused that takes place while trying to change a law. The legislative branch operates in a very organized and systematic way that is full of obstacles. It is designed to be this way to prevent laws being changed easily. changing a law must be very thoughtfully done. It has to be agreed upon by many people and has to be organized and finalized. This makes it very difficult for a even “iffy” law to be able to be passed.
